Purple Island or Al Khor island is in the Northeast coast of Qatar, around 1hour drive from Doha. It is a small island connected to the mainland by a wooden path/bridge with mangrove forests on either sides. It is a nice place to go to get out of the city and see some greenery.
The best time to visit this place is winter. The location is accessible to cars, you may need to walk almost 1-2 km from the parking spot to the island. You can do BBQ or bring your own food with you as there is no restaurant nor toilets there.
Kayaking and other eco-adventure activities are available through different tour agents in Qatar.
Speaking about history, the island is called Purple Island owing to the purple dye producing site which was situated on this island 1000s of years ago. The purple dye was produced from a species of sea snails. This dye was considered so special that it was used only for the clothes worn by the ruling class and the elite.
